He was soon disliked even more decidedly than his mother and grandsire, and all conjectures about him were spiced with references to the bygone magic of Old Whateley, and how the hills once shook when he shrieked the dreadful name of Yog-Sothoth in the midst of a circle of stones with a great book open in his arms before him. Dogs abhorred the boy, and he was always obliged to take various defensive measures against their barking menace.
–H.P. Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror
One of the best characters you can squeeze out of a single resource, any resource, is the Alaskan Sledge Dog (The Mountains of Madness, 96). Even a single pup, with its two skill and Combat icon, is superior to most other characters that have a cost of one. Then, it has the potential to gain power as your team of Sledge Dogs grows.
For now, our travels take us away from the Antarctic to southern Europe, where we seek to discover more Ancient Relics and the truths behind ancient myths. There, we shall try to break (or secure) the global reach of the Ancient Ones. With stakes like these, you’ll need all the help you can get. Stock up on guns, and enlist the help of man’s best friend.
Yes, that means more dogs. In half-buried temples, it’s always handy when you can have your hands free and leave the attacking to some vicious Attack Dogs (Into Tartarus, 91) which, like the Alaskan Sledge Dogs, have a cumulative effect. As Creatures, The Sledge Dogs even add to your Attack Dogs’ bonuses, allowing for a quick jump in combat icons for The Agency, and one you can gain very early in the game.
Sic ‘em!
Attack Dogs are an attachment, which is a drawback some of the time, but as is usual with attachments in an Agency deck, John Henry Price (Search for the Silver Key, 61) turns the attachment-ness into a great advantage. Agency players can also look to James Logan (Whispers in the Dark, 1) to quickly ramp up the Attack Dogs’ effectiveness, as the Attack Dogs can be searched and count as Creatures themselves.
It’s not difficult to figure out what The Agency can do with all these Combat Icons. Aside from winning struggles, growing your Combat icons exponentially also makes your Prize Pistol (In Memory of Day, 22) rather effective. And while we’re handing out wounds in full force, increasing the number of Creatures in your deck by including a few Diseased Sewer Rats (Secrets of Arkham, 44) should be a given.
Beyond The Agency, the Alaskan Sledge Dogs, and the Diseased Sewer Rats, there are more Creatures to be found. The Giant Albino Penguin (The Mountains of Madness, 9) is an efficient creature in the surprisingly Agency-friendly Hastur faction, which has more Creatures on offer and a proven track-record of synergy.
After all, it's a dog-eat-dog world in Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, and we’re getting closer and closer to uncovering the current cycle’s final Relics and crossing the Red Threshold–Into Tartarus. Release the hounds!
