An A Game of Thrones: The Card Game spotlight by guest writer Joe Becker

“Princess Myrcella will be there, my lord, and her younger than Lady Sansa. All the ladies of the court will be expected at a grand event like this, and as the tourney is in your honor, it would look queer if your family did not attend.”
–Septa Mordane, A Game of Thrones

Today, I would like to talk about some of the new Ladies that we’ll find in the next Chapter Pack for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, On Dangerous Grounds. There have been some powerful Lady characters in the past, and this Chapter Pack brings us several more that are sure to have an impact, in both melee and joust. And some of these ladies just might surprise you.

Shifting loyalties

First, I’m going to start with a Lady that only the most astute readers of A Song of Ice and Fire are likely to recall, Shyra Errol (On Dangerous Grounds, 45). House Errol first threw their support to Renly, but after his death they had to choose if they would support Stannis or the Lannisters. Shyra, the Lady of the House, has an ability that reflects its changing loyalties. She can be discarded to move most of the power from a killed character to another character you control. And at only two gold for three Strength, she’s a character who can be quite useful in a challenge, as well as one you can afford to play multiple times in order to benefit from her ability.

The kraken queen

Our next Lady comes from one of the Houses I most enjoy playing. Alannys Greyjoy (On Dangerous Grounds, 48) already has a good version from the A Time for Ravens cycle (Refugees of War, 89), but she is shut down whenever any other Queen is in play. This new version is stronger, and keeps the Queen trait. For three gold she’s three Strength with intrigue and power icons. This already makes her an efficient character, but when your opponent gets three or more non-character cards in his discard pile, Alannys can be used to cancel any effect that player triggers. This is an amazing ability. Greyjoy has always had some of the best cancels in the game, and the new Alannys certainly counts among them. If Alannys belonged to another house, she would have to count on her opponent to play events from hand or lose intrigue challenges so that she could “power up,” but Greyjoy has a plethora of raiding options to put cards into your opponents’ discard piles. Her lack of a Noble crest means you can’t stand her with Distinct Mastery, but she can stand with To Be A Kraken (Sacred Bonds, 47), allowing you to cancel multiple triggered effects in a single turn.

All her mother’s beauty, none of her mother’s nature

Finally, our last Lady does indeed have a Noble crest, and this little lady is going to cause no end of strife. Myrcella Lannister (On Dangerous Grounds, 43) has become a major pawn in the books and the focus of many schemes. This version of Myrcella is dual-house Lannister and Martell, and has uses in both joust and melee games. Any Martell player that runs Ghaston Grey (Forging the Chain, 34) will almost certainly use her since she is the cheapest Noble Martell character to return to hand for its ability. Meanwhile, in a melee game the ability to swap titles can be game changing. You can use her to swap into a title that prevents a player with powerful board presence from attacking you when you grab the title he supports, or use her mid-challenge to pull a title to you that gets you a bonus power for winning the challenge. The ability to manipulate the titles in melee is one that I enjoy, and we will see other similar abilities in this cycle.

These three Ladies, along with Lyanna Stark (On Dangerous Grounds, 56), reinforce the focus on unique characters that runs through the A Tale of Champions cycle of Chapter Packs for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game.

The houses playing the game of thrones always perch On Dangerous Grounds. This Chapter Pack is coming soon to shift the balance of power.
