Make Your Stand

Claim Prizes and Glory at a 2018 Star Wars™: Destiny Regional Championship

“All I am surrounded by is fear. And dead men.”

–Darth Vader, Star Wars: Vader Down

Star Wars: Vader Down offers a vision of Darth Vader in all his determined, menacing, Sith glory. At one point he finds himself surrounded by a small army of Rebel troopers, and when they tell him to lay down his weapon, he ignites his lightsaber, replying that he is surrounded only by "fear. And dead men."

The scene is chilling. Like the end of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it reminds us just how fearsome the Dark Lord of the Sith actually is. He inspires not only fear, but awe. And this scene has inspired the prizes for the 2018 Star Wars™: Destiny Regional Championships.

The Fleet Is Yours

Decide the Fate of the Galaxy at a 2018 Star Wars™: Armada Regional Championship

"Deploy the fleet so that nothing gets off that system. You are in command now, Admiral Piett."

–Darth Vader, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

It's time to ready the fleet!

The 2018 Star Wars™: Armada Regional Championships are nearly here, and you'll want to be ready well before the first shots are fired. After all, Star Wars: Armada is a game of epic fleet battles, featuring many of the Star Wars galaxy's largest warships. These are ships that boast crews of hundreds—even thousands. It takes them time to respond to new orders. And that means developing a strategy that embraces your strengths, baits your opponents into making mistakes, and sets you up for the eventual victory…

In the end, it's the fate of the galaxy at stake—plus a whole lot of fantastic prizes!

Top 64

Embrace the Galactic Empire's military strength and planetary conquests with this alternate art Imperial Star Destroyer Kuat Refit card, available to everyone in the Top 64 players at your Star Wars: Armada Regional Championship.

Top 16

Playing within the shadows of Imperial Star Destroyers—and the looming arrival of the Super Star Destroyer—Rebel players understand the need to make big statements with little ships. Those who battle their way into the Top 16 will gain the ability to proudly proclaim their Rebel status with this frosted plastic Nebulon-B Escort Frigate card.

Top 8

Once you're in range, it's time for your missiles, torpedoes, and lasers to rip through the stars, and if you make the Top 8, you'll be able to bring all the fire and explosions to life with a set of twelve custom dice.

Top 4

The capital ships of Star Wars: Armada aren't really designed to zig-zag though enemy fire unscathed. Instead, they rely on their shields and reinforced hulls to withstand enemy fire. But you can still improve your chances of survival by cancelling enemy attack dice with the five acrylic evade defense tokens you'll get for making the Top 4.

Regional Champion

Winning the battles of the Star Wars: Armada Regional Championships for yourfaction is a reward in and of itself. After all, it will feel good to know that you've brought order to the Galactic Empire or fanned the flames of rebellion. However, there are other prizes at stake as well.

Win a 2018 Star Wars: Armada Regional Championship, and you'll find yourself a hero of your chosen faction—complete with a trophy designed to look like a medallion encased in glass—and you'll walk away with a first round prize bye for an upcoming Star Wars: Armada National Championship!

Answer the Call to Battle

The fleet is at your command. The fate of the galaxy is at stake. The 2018 Star Wars: Armada Regional Championships are nearly here, and you can now review the list of events. Where will you answer the call to battle?

Turn Back Time

The Shattered Aeons Mythos Pack Is Now Available

“They did not seem to claim the spectres as kinsfolk. They referred to them as ‘those people,’ ‘the old people,’ or ‘they who dwell below,’ and appeared to hold them in too great a frightened veneration to talk much about them.”

Your time is up.

In The Forgotten Age, you journeyed far from home on a scientific expedition, but your search for knowledge had unexpected consequences as you unleashed secrets that should never have been brought to light. You have worked to undo your mistake, retracing your steps and continuing beyond the realm of reality to set things right, but have your efforts been in vain? Your last chance stands before you at the heart of the Nexus—do you have the courage to take the final steps?

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce that Shattered Aeons, the sixth and final Mythos Pack in The Forgotten Age cycle for Arkham Horror: The Card Game, is on sale now at your local retailer or online through our website!

Moment of Doom

As you enter the grand chamber beyond the doorway, the Nexus stirs. The Earth quakes below you and the wall chips and crumbles. Shards of stone float in the air above the strange artifact. Reality is beginning to shatter all around you. The energies of the Nexus swirl in the ground below you, beckoning you to enter. Whether it is a thing of science or magic, you do not know. It is a gateway of sorts, as far as you can tell… but a gateway to where?

All that you know to be real is challenged as time and space fall apart around you. Suddenly, you can journey to other times, other worlds, and the line between sanity and madness threatens to tear your mind apart. If you become Wracked by Time (Shattered Aeons, 341) during your investigation, both you and each investigator at a Shattered location must test your willpower, lest you suffer damage. Worse still, you are further punished if you try to deflect the pain—each asset assigned damage from this encounter card that is not defeated is shuffled into your deck. While this does save your assets from the discard pile, clearing all damage and giving you the chance to redraw it, you still have to pay their cost a second time, and there is no telling if you will be able to find them again in your moment of need.

Race Against the Clock

Even as it presents you with an incredible challenge, Shattered Aeons provides you with a couple tricks to counter these trials. Rogues can seek an asset lost to Wracked by Time by going All In (Shattered Aeons, 309) on a skill test. While the card itself only provides two wild icons for your skill test, it offers you the ultimate tool for getting out of a tight spot. If the test is successful, you'll draw cards for each point you succeeded by, to a maximum of five, shuffling any weaknesses back into your deck without resolving them! You can draw an entire hand’s worth of cards and build a new strategy whenever the need arises, and this can come quite in handy as your location in space and time shifts, forcing you to face new challenges around every corner.

But while these new vistas may tempt you to fight eldritch horrors with arcane implements, sometimes nothing compares to the classics. Guardians can heft a Flamethrower (Shattered Aeons, 305) onto their backs, filling both of their hand slots as well as their body slot for the deadly weapon. With this deadly asset, you must always attack the strongest enemy, but the benefits are worth the danger. This Weapon give you four additional combat and if your attack is successful, instead of its standard damage, you may assign up to four damage among all enemies engaged with you! This can make quick work of a swarm of weaker enemies, freeing your other actions, or if you find yourself facing an elite enemy with plenty of health, you can upgrade your Flamethrower with some Custom Ammunition (Heart of the Elders, 193) to increase its effectiveness. And if you have a Venturer (The Forgotten Age, 18) in your team to carry some spare fuel, you can turn the tables and become the scourge of the monsters’ nightmares.

If you douse one such enemy in Kerosene (Shattered Aeons, 304) before setting it ablaze, the certainty of its demise and your immediate safety can ease the mind of a weary investigator or Ally, healing two horror and buying you a little more time. But for the ultimate saving grace, Mystics can learn to cast the mighty  Seal of the Seventh Sign (Shattered Aeons, 311). This Spell is loaded with seven charges to seal the auto-fail token, but it loses one charge each time a special token other than the elder sign is revealed. Once the charges are gone, the Seal is removed from the game. But the time that this card can earn you may prove priceless as you continue to fall through space and time with no promise of an end.

Make Your Own Fate

You have come so far and learned so much. This campaign has changed your investigators and you have watched them grow as individuals and a team, but you have also lost more than you ever feared. If you could go back, if you could undo all that has happened since you first signed on for that expedition, would you? It's no use pondering the past—all you can do now is try to set it right, even if it costs you everything.

Eight KeyForge Playmats Are Now Available

“You might call it madness, but for all we know, madness is a key ingredient.”
   –Inka the Spider

Your battles in KeyForge: Call of the Archons will take you across the Crucible, encompassing countless houses, creatures, and artifacts. You never know where a new Vault may be found or when an unexpected clash may take place. And when the time comes to field your battles, you had best be ready.

The perfect landing place for your KeyForge clashes has just arrived: one 26” x 26” gamemat and seven 24” x 14” playmats for KeyForge are now available at your local retailer or online through our website from Fantasy Flight Supply!

Sigil of Brotherhood

When you step into the role of an Archon, you will lead teams built from the creatures, technology, artifacts, and skills of three of the Crucible’s seven Houses, each of which are represented in these mats. Each playmat features original art pieces from KeyForge atop a high-quality, slip-resistant rubber base to immerse you in the diverse wonderland of the Crucible while keeping your games organized, whether you are participating in a high-caliber tournament with KeyForge Organized Play or playing around the kitchen table.

The Architect’s Vault Two-Player Gamemat features a 26” x 26” play surface to keep your cards organized and protected during your clashes for control of the Architects’ Vaults. With marked sections for your keys, deck, Archon card, archive, and discard pile, this mat keeps the focus on your games as you match wits with your opponent without worrying about the safety of your unique deck.

The Brute Force Playmat features Valdr, a hero of House Brobnar. This proud House is filled with giants, goblins, and any other creature who lives for the thrill of a good fight. Members of this House are ruled by only the strongest among them, whether that strength is physical, mental, or in their personality. After all, an enemy’s morale can be destroyed by a well-worded yo mama joke just as well as by a blow from an Æmber-infused warhammer.

The Into the Underworld Playmat offers a glimpse of the demon Snudge from House Dis. Along with his dark brethren, this creature dwells in the netherworld that divides the current layer of the Crucible from the last. The demons and imps of Dis cannot feel intense emotions on their own, instead stealing them from unfortunate prisoners and distilling them into imprints called “souls.” When Archons clash, such emotions are sure to run high, and you can be sure these creatures will be close to the action.

The Positron Bolt Playmat features one of the scholars from the Society for Logic and Reason, also known as House Logos. This House is divided into two factions: Theorists who focus on reason and possibility, and Mechanics who constantly run tests and study their results. While both sides believe theirs is the only true path to understanding, they are united by a passion for knowledge and a general lack of regard for ‘ethics’ and ‘morality,’ or anything else that would restrain their academic pursuits.

The Martian Madness Playmat displays your pride for the glorious empire of Mars with vibrant art of one of its many soldiers. This insular House strives to maintain its genetic and cultural purity, but the empire’s translocation to the Crucible has provided new benefits, like the psycho-reactive Æmber that helps their mind-control experiments and a host of new creatures with spliceable genes to create the ultimate Martian killing machine!

The Raiding Knight Playmat features one of the heavenly warriors of House Sanctum. This faction follows the teachings of the Church of the Opened Eye, keeping their territory safe, clean, and pleasant. Through hard work and religious study, Sanctum promises transcendence to its followers, but some claim that the House’s original members were always made of energy, so their promises of enlightenment are impossible. The truth of the matter is only open to a few, but if you have the will to walk among them, you may just find the answers you seek.

The Finishing Blow Playmat draws from the cunning House Shadows for its art. Filled with thieves, assassins, and general ne’er-do-wells, this House is known for speed, cleverness, and a loose interpretation of the term “personal property.” While they are willing to plot and backstab to make a profit, these creatures are willing to do anything to help a friend. But if you become the mark of one of their schemes, it’s a near-guarantee that you’ll never see it coming.

The Mighty Tiger Playmat features a battle between two of the powerful creatures of House Untamed. This House is tended by the mechanical faeries the Architects built ages ago and while they have kept balance in the wilds, they have made no effort to keep the wildlife separate. As such, new deadly species of flora and fauna have evolved, and some have even learned to use Æmber to bend the natural world to their will. The Crucible may be inhabitable to all creatures, but it certainly is not safe.

The Crucible Awaits

Now that the time has come for you to jump through the wormhole and make your mark on the Crucible, you can declare your favorite House and display your cards with pride. While a deck’s true power comes from the interactions between cards rather than a single key player, there is no harm in choosing favorites once in a while.

The Archons Arise

KeyForge: Call of the Archons Is On Sale Now

Order your own copy of KeyForge: Call of the Archons at your local retailer or online through our website today!

It doesn’t matter what the treasure is, only how it was won.

From the mind of Richard Garfield comes KeyForge, the world’s first Unique Deck Game! On the planet of the Crucible, you will step into the role of a mighty Archon, who must lead a diverse team assembled from the creatures, technologies, artifacts, and abilities of the Crucible’s Houses as you race to gather precious Æmber that will unlock the planet’s hidden Vaults. Only one can claim the full knowledge and power of this planet. Do you have what it takes?

The first set for KeyForgeCall of the Archons, is on sale now at your local retailer or online through our website! Then, register your Archon Decks using the KeyForge Master Vault at KeyForgeGame.com! (Companion app is now available on Google Play and coming soon to the App Store.)

Homeworld Portal

What sets KeyForge apart? KeyForge is the first Unique Deck Game, meaning that every Archon Deck is one-of-a kind—unlike any other deck in existence. With every deck presenting its own Archon and distinct combination of cards, every game is a new adventure of discovery and exploration. Every deck is made up of 36 cards, but it's not the cards that make your deck special, but the interactions between those cards—strategies and tactics which can only be found in your deck. You must discover the most powerful synergies within your Archon Deck in order to master it and challenge yourself to make tough tactical decisions in every game. With over 104 quadrillion possible decks, every player has the chance to become the best in the world at playing their decks and discovering the strength within.

Within each of unique Archon Deck of KeyForge: Call of the Archons, you will find creatures from three of the Crucible’s seven Houses: BrobnarDisLogosMarsSanctum, Shadows, and Untamed. Each of these factions has its own culture, history, and skills that help them stand against their rivals and interact with their allies when the Archons sound the warhorns.

Brothers in Battle

Over a series of fast-paced turns where the advantage can turn in an instant, you will use your followers to reap Æmber, hold off your enemy, and forge the three keys needed to unlock the Crucible’s hidden Vaults and win the game. You begin your turn by declaring one of the three Houses within your deck, and for the remainder of the turn, you may only play and use cards from that House. Choosing your House is just the start of the tough tactical decisions, as you must leverage the cards in your hand and in play to gain the upper hand. Choosing to reap more Æmber now or take the fight to your opponent… picking the exact sequence of events to pull off a massive combo… these are just a fraction of the choices that can emerge in a game of KeyForge!

But always remember that balance is key. If you allow your rival to grow their army, they will soon outnumber and destroy your forces. But if you focus on the thrill of the fight and neglect reaping, you won't move any closer to unlocking the Vault. If you can find the balance and possess six Æmber in your pool at the start of your turn, you will forge a key and move one step closer to victory. The first player to forge three keys will gain access the Vault and earn victory.

The Architects' Vaults

When you jump through the wormhole to begin your clashes on the Crucible, the KeyForge: Call of the Archons Starter Set is the perfect place to begin. In this set, you will find two standard training decks: Miss “Onyx” Censorius and Radiant Argus the Supreme. These decks have the same cards in every copy of the Starter Set, and they're perfect for taking your first steps into the Crucible. Then, once you have mastered the starter decks, you can continue your games with the two unique Archon Decks that are also included in the Starter Set. Finally, you'll find all of the keys, tokens, chain trackers, and status cards that you and your opponent need to start playing.

If you wish to continue your exploration of the Crucible, you can expand your arsenal of teams with Call of the Archons Archon Decks. Every Archon Deck contains a full play experience with a deck that cannot be altered, so you're always ready to play, right out of the box. Then, you can track your teams using the KeyForge Master Vault. Here, you can register your Archon Decks, follow the performance of your own decks and those belonging to other players, and easily find the latest information about KeyForge Organized Play. The world of the Crucible is vast, but by learning from your teams and your rivals, you may just discover more than you ever thought possible.

The Dimension Door

The time has come to don the mantle of the Archon and lead your team to victory. Accept the challenge of the Architects, unlock the secrets of the Crucible, and enter a world where anything is possible!

Pick up your copy of KeyForge: Call of the Archons (KF01) and your collection of unique Archon Decks (KF02a) at your local retailer today or on the Fantasy Flight Games website here! Con of the Rings

Recounting the First The Lord of the Rings LCG Convention

For nearly seven years, The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game has invited players from across the world to enter J.R.R. Tolkien's mythic land of Middle-earth and embark on their own epic journeys through this iconic landscape. Banding together, these players must work together to fight back against the machinations of Sauron and his minions.

Recently, many of these players came together to celebrate their love of the game at the first fan convention dedicated to The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. Developer Caleb Grace was in attendance and is here to recap his experience at the very first Con of the Rings!

Developer Caleb Grace on Con of the Rings

During the weekend of October 12 – 15, I had the privilege to attend the first ever The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game convention: Con of the Rings. It was organized by a local group of players known as Free Men of the North, and hosted by the Fantasy Flight Games Center in Roseville, MN. Prior to the event, the Free Men created a Kickstarter campaign in order to make tickets available online and gauge interest. Within a week, they had surpassed their initial goal and reserved the event hall at the Games Center. A short while later, they had to increase their maximum attendance cap to satisfy player demand. Community members from all over the United States (and overseas!) were eager for the opportunity to come together and enjoy The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game together.

For myself, I was excited for the opportunity to meet players face-to-face where I’d only exchanged emails before. Some people I had met previously at Gen Con, but for many others it was my first time getting to shake hands and talk. I was amazed by how friendly and enthusiastic all the attendees were. I already knew that The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game has a fantastic player base, but this was some next-level kindness. Local players opened their homes for out-of-town visitors to stay for free. They provided transportation to and from the airport. And in the case of one young player, several attendees gave him the gift cards they’d won as prizes that weekend so he could grow his fledgling collection.

In addition to all of this generosity, there was an palatable atmosphere of fun that permeated all three days of the convention. You could feel it the moment you walked into the event hall where the Con of the Rings was held. Eighty plus players were divided into numerous groups, spread across the entire space, playing all kinds of scenarios. All of them were having a great time playing the game—many of them playing with people they had just met!

The event organizers had created a schedule for the convention. The main event, which ran across all three days, was a group effort to defeat all the adventures in The Lord of the Rings Saga Expansions. Over the course of the weekend, Con of the Rings attendees took The One Ring all the way from Bag End to Mount Doom, where they successfully cast it into the fire to defeat Sauron. One player even posted a picture of their copy of The One Ring torn to pieces when they destroyed it at the end of the campaign!

To promote this large group saga campaign, the Free Men created an enormous achievement board that they posted on the wall of the event space. It had the names of all twenty adventures, listed in order and spread across each day of the convention. When a group successfully completed a scenario, they could sign their names next to that adventure, indicating that they had defeated this stage of the campaign. To add even more fun, the Free Men created custom achievements for each adventure to challenge players, ranging from surviving eight rounds in The Black Gate Opens to defeating the Balrog by sacrificing Pippin in A Journey in the Dark.

The event was culminated and commemorated by a large group photo. This more than anything spoke to me of the togetherness felt by everyone in attendance. Being a family man with young kids, I often groan about group photos, but this was something else. Everybody wanted to be in this photo to remember being there. When it was time for the picture, everybody paused their games and squeezed into frame in order to get the shot. The image speaks for itself.

Thinking back on it now, I’m still blown away by how excited everyone was to play the game for hours on each day of the convention. I typically get to play my fair share of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game in the office, but there was such enthusiasm among the players there that I had to join in. I ended up playing several games of 2v2 using The Woodland Realm and The Wizard’s Quest Custom Scenario Kits. Since these products are a very recent addition to the game, it was encouraging to see how much people enjoy playing with them. I’m excited to see if this format catches on with more players once the products go on sale through our POD factory!

My competitive matches were the highlight of the convention for me, especially when I got to play with people I’d never played with before. I got to see a lot of different decks: there were some classic builds, like Hobbits, Dwarves, and Outlands, as well as some more recent additions, such as Dale and Woodmen. In each case it was fun to see how each individual built and played their deck a little different from everyone else. And these were just a small sample of the much greater variety of decks being played all weekend.

Fantasy Flight Games developers Caleb Grace and Matt Newman enjoy The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game with fans during Con of the Rings.

For my part, I played three of my own decks over the weekend: a mono-Spirit Caldara build, tri-sphere Silvans, and a Lore & Tactics trap deck. Each of them held their own and offered my partner some help, but my most valuable contribution to my competitive matches was probably the encounter deck I built using the quick build rules and a single copy of The Woodland Realm. It included a lot of small, low engagement cost enemies to harass the opposing team, while the locations and treacheries drove their threat higher. When they eventually reached Stage 3, they found its quest points was equal to the threat value of their highest threat player. That was typically somewhere in the mid-40s by then! We usually completed our quest first.

Throughout the weekend, attendees would occasionally pull me aside to express their love for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. This was easily the best part of the convention for me, because of how rewarding it was to see people enjoy my contributions to the game. Normally I get my player feedback from online forums, but that lacks the personal dimension of sharing the experience in person. To be at Con of the Rings and interact with the players face-to-face was as invigorating as freshly baked lembas.

By the end of the weekend, it seemed like many of us were sad that it had to end, and we consoled ourselves by saying, “See you next year.” I’m happy to say that the Free Men of the North are already planning the second Con of the Rings, and I look forward to it. They did a fantastic job working with the Games Center and the community to organize this event, and they deserve a huge “thank you” for their effort, especially because they did it all completely as volunteers! So I want to say “thank you” to the Free Men, the Games Center, and everyone who attended Con of the Rings this year. I hope to see you next fall!

Announcing Two Rebel Expansions for Star Wars: Legion

“If we can make it to the ground, we’ll take the next chance. And the next. On and on until we win. Or the chances are spent.”
   –
Jyn Erso, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

After years of escalating tensions, the Galactic Civil War finally erupted when members of the fledgling Rebel Alliance mounted a bold attack on the top secret Imperial research facility on Scarif. Soon, you can experience this battle through the eyes of the Rebel forces who fought there. Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce two new Rebel units for Star Wars™: Legion:

Order your own copy of these expansions at your local retailer or online through our website today!

These expansions capture the essence of the Rebel Alliance, giving you everything you need to build a strike team that can quickly infiltrate Imperial lines and complete their mission no matter the cost. Containing a crack unit of elite Rebel soldiers and a new commander bold enough to lead them on even the most dangerous missions, these expansions give you exciting new options for constructing your Rebel army and pushing back against the Empire.

Jyn Erso Commander Expansion

The shadow of the Death Star looms across the galaxy, threatening any planet that doesn’t fall in line with the Empire. Only those brave—and perhaps foolish—enough to stand against the Empire can hope to save the galaxy from this technological terror. Raised by the extremist Saw Gerrera and on her own from a young age, Jyn Erso embodies both of these qualities.

Reckless and aggressive, Erso is nonetheless a brave leader who can contribute to your battle plan in many ways. Unafraid to wade into battle with her collapsible tonfa drawn, her quick thinking often gets her out of tricky situations. In fact, her Rebellious streak often comes in handy, letting her make a quick strike against an enemy unit or dive for cover before she can be targeted.

The Jyn Erso Commander Expansion includes one finely sculpted, easily assembled Jyn Erso miniature to lead your Rebel army into battle, complete with three new command cards to field in battle. Along with Jyn Erso, you’ll find the associated unit card and four upgrade cards for you to enhance Jyn Erso and your other units.

We’ll take a full look at everything inside the Jyn Erso Commander Expansion, including all of her signature command cards, in a future preview!

Rebel Pathfinders Unit Expansion

Spies, saboteurs, and assassins, the Rebel Pathfinders are the most elite, and the most deadly, of the Alliance’s soldiers. These grizzled combat veterans need unwavering dedication to their cause in order to endure the horrors of their operations and missions. Those for volunteered for the Battle of Scarif in particular were willing to sacrifice everything for the dream of the Rebellion.

No strangers to operating behind enemy lines, a group of Rebel Pathfinders is the perfect special forces unit to take your enemy by surprise and keep them off-guard from the very beginning of a game. Since they’re usually already operating on the battlefield before an engagement starts, traditional deployment zones mean little to these troops. Instead, they can deploy anywhere on the battlefield beyond Range 3 of all enemy units. Once they’re in position, you’ll find the Rebel Pathfinders can quickly adapt to the changing tenor of a battle as they reconfigure their A-300 Blaster Rifles to be effective at both short and long range.

The Rebel Pathfinders Unit Expansion features six finely sculpted Rebel Pathfinder miniatures, enough for one special forces unit. This expansion also includes the unit card and an assortment of upgrade cards, inviting you to outfit your Rebel Pathfinders for any operation.

We’ll take a closer look inside the Rebel Pathfinders Unit Expansion, including all of their upgrade cards, in a future preview!

They can be run in either format—Sealed or Archon—and with any of the game's variants. Most, however, will eschew the variants in favor of ensuring a welcoming experience for the newer players joining these Discovery Pods for their first taste of the game and its Organized Play.

These events also offer you a shot at a range of fun prizes, including Æmber tokens and active house cards that double as chain trackers.

Your Taste of the Crucible

A Royal Charge

Preview the Imperial Royal Guards Unit Expansion for Star Wars: Legion

"I assure you, we are quite safe from your friends here."
–Emperor Palpatine, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

The Imperial Royal Guard is shrouded in mystery. Encased in blood-red robes and peering out from behind featureless masks, these enigmatic warriors do little to reveal their combat prowess. Regardless of the rumors surrounding them, their mere presence and menacing force pikes are all it takes to keep any visitors from making threats against the Emperor.

Order your own copy of the Imperial Royal Guards Unit Expansion at your local retailer or online through our website today!

Soon, you can witness the deft reflexes and superb combat awareness of the Imperial Royal Guards firsthand with the Imperial Royal Guards Unit Expansion for Star Wars™: Legion. These elite warriors are trained in many forms of combat, making them equally lethal up close or from a distance. More importantly, they are unquestioningly loyal to Emperor Palpatine, following his orders without hesitation.

Within the Imperial Royal Guards Unit Expansion, you’ll find everything you need to field a group of these crack bodyguards, including four finely sculpted Imperial Royal Guard miniatures. Additionally, the skills of your Royal Guards can be further enhanced by five upgrade cards, while a unit card and a handful of tokens help you fully integrate them into your army.

Join us today as we get a look at what the Imperial Royal Guards are truly capable of.

Unwavering Loyalty

The Imperial Royal Guards are the most skilled warriors the Empire has to offer. Out of millions of soldiers, only they have met rigorous standards for strength, intelligence, and loyalty. As such, you can expect the Royal Guards to excel in every phase of a Star Wars: Legion battle, especially when it comes to protecting other units or objectives.

For 75 points, a standard unit of three Imperial Royal Guards gives you a special forces unit that can lock down entire sections of the battlefield, repelling anything that comes too close. Each member of this unit rolls two black dice with their EC-17 Hold-out Blasters, matching the Scout Troopers in terms of sheer firepower.

But the Imperial Royal Guards truly set themselves apart in melee combat. Trained in multiple forms of martial arts, they are experts with their force pikes and replace one of the EC-17’s black dice with an even more lethal red die when attacking with these weapons. More importantly, as the first non-unique unit to feature the Charge keyword, the Imperial Royal Guards can quickly respond to any threats that come too close, rapidly moving to meet these units and immediately performing a melee attack.

While three miniatures is slightly smaller than a typical unit, the advanced training of the Imperial Royal Guards makes them more than a match for enemy units with superior numbers. If you still want a bit more out of them, however, an Electrostaff Guard provides additional strength to melee attacks, among other benefits. Although this miniature can only contribute its two black attack dice to a melee attack, it also makes the entire unit immune to Pierce from melee attacks, perfect for avoiding any swipes from lightsabers.

Even more remarkably, members of the Royal Guard are surprisingly hearty, despite wearing minimal armor. In addition to rolling the same red defense dice as most other Imperial units, each Royal Guard miniature has a wound threshold of two, making them even more difficult to remove from the field. This is particularly useful when exercising their Guardian 2 keyword to cancel damage from ranged attacks against friendly troopers, allowing them to potentially take a wound for another unit without losing one of their own miniatures.

It takes more to become a member of the Imperial Royal Guard than considerable combat skills, of course. Those who seek to become part of the Emperor’s personal entourage must exhibit great resolve, even in the face of adversity. Thanks to this great Discipline, the Imperial Royal Guards may remove up to two suppression tokens when they are issued an order. This gives them the unique ability to make use of the improved cover provided by suppression tokens, then remove them when they’re ready to spring into action.

Despite their many inherent skills, there are still ways for the Imperial Royal Guards to improve. Indeed, one of their greatest strengths is their ability to adapt to new situations. With two training upgrade slots, the Imperial Royal Guards are an extremely flexible unit whose innate abilities can be augmented in a number of ways.

For example, it’s not uncommon for Royal Guards to put themselves in harm’s way to protect another unit. Displaying such Tenacity can actually help them eliminate a threat, granting them a little extra power when they perform a melee attack after they've taken some hits. Similarly, the Royal Guards are prepared to hunt down any who would threaten the Emperor, and the Hunter upgrade pairs well with Tenacity, granting them an aim token while attacking a wounded trooper unit.

For the Empire

Silently following the Emperor wherever he goes, Imperial Royal Guards refuse to put their skills on display until a true threat presents itself. Bring these vigilant defenders to your games of Star Wars: Legion to see what they can really do!

Look for the Imperial Royal Guards Unit Expansion (SWL23) to release alongside the Emperor Palpatine Commander Expansion (SWL22) in the fourth quarter of 2018! You can pre-order your copy at your local retailer or online through our webstore today!

A Samurai's Significance

A Samurai's Significance

Vote on the Theme of the Community-Created Samurai

The world of Rokugan is open before you, and the samurai created by you, the Legend of the Five Rings community, is already taking shape.

Every week, the community will vote on various aspects of a new Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game non-unique character that will appear in a future expansion! While the final version of the card is subject to changes during playtesting, the heart and soul of the character will be defined by you.

In the first vote, you determined that this samurai would belong to the Unicorn Clan, and last week, you chose the exact family that this samurai would join. Nearly 2,200 votes were cast, but the Utaku family emerged as a clear winner with over 41% of the vote. The Iuchi family was a distant second, closely followed by the Moto. Your choice was clear, but now that we know this samurai belongs to the Utaku family, we turn to more mechanical concerns—what will be the theme of this card?

The Unicorn Clan features several distinct themes, and the theme that our samurai embraces could shape the future of the entire game! Read on for an exploration of the five options, and make sure you vote in the poll at the bottom of the article. The poll will only remain open for 24 hours, so let your voice be heard!

Movement

With their powerful cavalry setting them apart from every other Great Clan, the Unicorn possess an unparalleled mobility. Slipping in and out of conflicts makes the Unicorn an unpredictable opponent. With cards like Golden Plains Outpost (Core Set, 7) and Moto Juro (Fate Has No Secrets, 89), it can be easy to move in and out of conflicts. Will the community-created samurai take its cue from this unprecedented mobility?

First Player

Since the days of the Core Set, the Unicorn have had a particular affinity for being the first player. The Meishōdoō Wielder (Core Set, 113), for instance, has a reduced cost while you are the first player, while Way of the Unicorn (Core Set, 198) allows you to hold your initiative, even when you would normally pass it to your opponent. Will our Utaku samurai follow this impulsive and aggressive line of thinking?

Swarm

The Unicorn Clan knows that there can be great strength in numbers. Riding across the windswept plains of western Rokugan, few samurai could stand calmly and face a charging wing of Utaku Battle Maidens. Across Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game, you’ll find cards that reward the Unicorn Clan for bringing their full force to each conflict. Shinjo Shono (Breath of the Kami, 11) raises the skill of all your Cavalry characters, while the Utaku Infantry (Core Set, 110) grows in strength for each Unicorn character participating in the conflict. Will our samurai prefer to fight alongside a group of fellow samurai?

Exploration

Although the Unicorn have spent hundreds of years in Rokugan, they are still regarded as newcomers by many of the other Great Clans. Indeed, the Unicorn spent centuries exploring the world beyond Rokugan, searching for threats to the Emerald Empire, and learning what lies across the burning sands and beyond the horizon. Cards like Chasing the Sun (Into the Forbidden City, 58) already invite you to venture deeper into your opponent’s provinces, uncovering the secrets you may find there. While exploration is a key element of the Unicorn's past, chasing the sun may also be their future, with cards like Shinjo Trailblazer (???????? ?? ??? ????, 6) receiving a boost when they discover new lands.  Will our new samurai share this thirst for exploration?

Out-of-Clan Allies

In their travels, the Unicorn encountered many cultures and peoples beyond the Emerald Empire’s borders. To survive, they often found that they needed to learn from others and forge alliances that they may have otherwise shunned. Even now that they have returned to Rokugan, the Unicorn still have what many would regard as Gaijin Customs (The Chrysanthemum Throne, 79). Will our community-created samurai choose to embrace these alliances with outsiders?

Consider your options carefully and cast your vote below! The poll will only remain open for 24 hours!

Part of the Clan

You’ve determined that the community-created samurai will join the Unicorn Clan and the Utaku family—but what will be their role within their clan and family? The choice lies with you! In a future article, we'll return to our samurai's theme with a list of specific abilities. Next week, join us for an exploration of our samurai's skill values!

Vote in the next 24 hours to ensure your voice is heard as we take the next step in creating a new non-unique samurai for Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game! Then, join us next week for a decision regarding our samurai’s skills.

Power Play

Win Exclusive Prizes at the 2018 A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Store Championships

"A shadow on the wall," Varys murmured, "yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow."

–George R.R. Martin, A Clash of Kings

Lord Varys was speaking with Tyrion Lannister when he suggested that a very small man could cast a very large shadow. Tyrion Lannister had just recently been appointed Hand of the King, and Varys was offering a lesson about power. Power, Varys said, was not a "mummer's trick," but a shadow on the wall—something visible to which men and women, lords and ladies, rich and poor could react—even when the source of the shadow was unknown.

"Power resides where men believe it resides," said Varys, and while the trappings of power—titles, strength of arms, riches, and influence—were not power themselves, they were often enough to make others believe the holders were powerful.

So it is with the prizes for which you'll compete at the 2018 A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Store Championships!

Your prizes won't make you more powerful. They won't earn you more power in the game. But they may yet convince others that you're a player to be respected.

Of course, there's only one way to win these prizes: to attend an A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Store Championship. You must play the game of thrones, and you must win. So take some time to review the prizes at stake. Then start plotting your path to victory. Prizes are shipping soon, events will begin later in December, and you can review our list of parcipating retailers to find an event near you!

By the time you make the Top 2 at a 2018 A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Store Championship, you'll have started casting a long shadow—one that will inspire others to believe in your power. And even though it's no solid object, this shadow can be used like a tool and cast where you need it…

If you make the Top 2, you'll win a set of acrylic shadow tokens that you can use to mark your cards in shadows, especially when you use the Assault from the Shadows agenda to put them into the shadows in the first place.

Additionally, you'll have amassed enough power to inspire others to follow you—and in a very noticeable fashion. Secrets and Strongholds

Bring Rokugan to Life with Emerald Empire’s Tools for Game Masters

Order your own copy of Emerald Empire at your local retailer or online through our website today!

“In the beginning there was Nothing. This was not the nothing of the Void, for that is unchanged, unchanging, and unchangeable. This Nothing was the source of all, but first it was empty and alone. After uncountable ages, Nothing realized it was alone, and it became afraid. This created a third of the world. Then Nothing longed for a companion, and this longing created another third of the world. Then Nothing realized what it had done and regretted fear and longing, and the last third of the world was created. Then there was no more Nothing, and in its place was the world.” So it is recorded in the historical writings of the learned Imperial Scribe Miya Chinatsu.

The world of Legend of the Five Rings  is yours to explore—and build—in Emerald Empire, the essential setting sourcebook for the Legend of the Five Rings Roleplaying Game. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the tools the book offers to Game Masters in particular, including background information on the setting’s history and cosmology, worldbuilding resources, and details to make the setting come alive!

Legends of an Empire

The Rokugan known to samurai has been forged over one thousand years of history. For the first time since the debut of the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game, fans can now read the chronicle of the Empire’s founding, the evolution of its arts and culture, and the scars left by its greatest wars and schemes. But the story begins even earlier, in the Age of Heaven and Earth, the creation of the world, and the reign of the Five Ancient Races. After the descent of the Kami, the War Against Fu Leng was fought and won, ushering in the so-called “Thousand Years of Peace.” The first war between Great Clans, the Gozoku Conspiracy, the attack of the Maw, and the Rise of Iuchiban all marked periods of turmoil and change in the Empire despite the nominal “peace.” More recently, the “flower of sleep and dreams” has transformed urban life in cities such as Ryokō Owari, and the heresies of the Pure Land doctrine have taken root among the downtrodden. To explore different campaign tones and balances of power, a GM could easily set their stories in one of these different time periods.

Equally important to Game Masters, as well as to players of devout and spiritual characters, is the cosmology of the setting: the layout of the Spirit Realms, from the Heavens above to the hell of Jigoku below. Where does a soul go when it dies? What strange creatures dwell in the magical spaces that exist beside our own? What wisdom can be found by the dreamwalkers following the Path of Dreams? Is it true that mortals can ascend to Heaven with breathtakingly rare nemuranai known as sky ladders? GMs can find the answer to these questions and more in Emerald Empire, lending inspiration to create entire campaigns based on some of the possibilities.

The Lands of Rokugan

Over the course of a Legend of the Five Rings Roleplaying Game campaign, players will visit all manner of locales, from grand palaces and fortified castles, to bustling cities and shady harbors, sacred shrines and serene temples, and into the wilderness beyond. Emerald Empire offers Game Masters all the tools they need to create their own fantastic locales, diving into the way these places grow and develop. By understanding the economic underpinnings of the different locations—as well as their cultural, governmental, or religious importance—you can bring the world of Rokugan to life.

Emerald Empire digs into the reasons why castles are built where they are, their major architectural features, who’s who in a castle or castle town, and how different courts are structured and governed. This information is often essential if you’re planning on running campaigns centering on politics and intrigue. Cities get a similar treatment, inviting GMs to consider the goods exchanged at the trading hub, the different districts that might develop, how river and sea ports might differ, and how the different strata of people interact when living so close to those of other castes.

The book also explores the roots of villages, the essential crops and resources that are farmed or foraged in Rokugan, how taxes are collected and laws are enforced, and the environmental catastrophes that every peasant fears. Roads, rivers, and waystations are the vital connections between these places, each with their own rules, which must be respected by those samurai given leave to travel. Finally, the book explores the typical features of shrines, temples, and monasteries, and its chapters detail Rokugani beliefs, traditions, and taboos. The signs of heretical cults, malicious Fortunes, and forbidden rituals can be found, too, if one knows how and where to look.

New titles tied to the roles of samurai in different locales help players and Game Masters explore the mechanics and themes of that place, as well as underscoring the style of the campaign. GMs can bestow these titles to players as the campaign’s narrative unfolds, allowing the group to acquire a more specialized skillset to fulfill their duty to their lord. Although each school brings its own unique talents to bear on an investigation, yoriki (assistants and deputies to Clan and Emerald Magistrates) must be able to hold their own in a skirmish, as well as navigating the complex currents of government bureaucracies and criminal enterprises. Trained to Take Them Alive, their title ability ensures that yoriki can easily trigger the Snaring quality on weapons and stop criminals before they get away.

Beyond the Official Cartography

These tools and resources can help you make your own imprint on Rokugan and craft lush, intriguing locations in which to base your campaigns. What hidden and wonderful places exist between the markers on a map? The answer falls to you. In our next article, we’ll take a look at some of the specific locations highlighted in the sourcebook, as well as the ways Game Masters can use them in their home campaigns!

Delve into the secrets of Rokugan and explore parts unknown with this essential sourcebook for players, Game Masters, and fans of the setting alike. Visit your local retailer or the Fantasy Flight Games webstore to pre-order your copy of Emerald Empire (L5R04) today!

Chaos in the Clover Club

A Scenario Preview for Return to the Dunwich Legacy

“Two centuries ago, when talk of witch-blood, Satan-worship, and strange forest presences was not laughed at, it was custom to give the reasons for avoiding the locality. In our sensible age—since the Dunwich horror of 1928 was hushed up by those who had the town’s and the world’s welfare at heart—people shun it without knowing exactly why.”
   –H.P. Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror

Order your own copy of Return to the Dunwich Legacy at your local retailer or online through our website today!

When you first experienced The Dunwich Legacy, you left your city behind for the first time to investigate the disappearances of two of Arkham’s esteemed professors. Your search began with an exploration of Arkham’s Miskatonic University and the Clover Club, before taking you to a remote town on the brink of madness. You thought that you were safe, that the case was closed… but the eyes of Arkham once again turn to you for aid. And this time, the danger is greater than ever.

Before you board the train to Dunwich, you must go back to the beginning and return to Arkham’s seedy underbelly in search of information. Today, we're pleased to offer you a closer look at the Return to The House Always Wins scenario from the Return to the Dunwich Legacy upgrade expansion for Arkham Horror: The Card Game, now available for pre-order at your local retailer or online through our website!

All That Jazz

You enter the Clover Club in search of Dr. Morgan. The speakeasy is bustling, filled with patrons looking to relax and drink, or make it big. Comfortable leather couches, mahogany furniture, and an array of beautiful art greets gamblers, tempting them into the life of the would-be affluent. The mesmerizing melody of a torch singer and her band grows louder as you approach the nearby stage. Mobsters and business-types chatter quietly over the music, wheeling and dealing the night away. You don’t appear to be in much danger, but you cannot allow yourself to lose track of your mission—you are here in search of the professor. Perhaps someone here knows where he is.

While the club may look familiar at first glance, there are new, darker secrets lurking just beneath the surface and there are new shadowy areas of the club to explore. Some cards in this expansion, including locations like the Clover Club Lounge (Return to the Dunwich Legacy, 16) are alternate versions of those from earlier sets of Arkham Horror: The Card Game. In order to keep the mysteries of your investigation alive, the front side of these cards bear the same information, numbers, and icons as their original counterparts, while the back side reflects the card’s true secrets. There is no way of knowing what dangers you’re stepping into—you must simply steel your nerve and embrace the unknown.

In the shadowed rooms of the Clover Club, the wealthy and powerful mix with the lowlifes of Arkham’s underground. Vast amounts of money are constantly switching hands and backroom deals are negotiated with only the occasional disappearance. Anyone in the crowd could be a threat, but you may be your own worst enemy. In this gambling den, you will be forced to make difficult decisions and deal with the consequences. You may get caught in a tight spot and have to Raise the Stakes (Return to the Dunwich Legacy, 19), either cheating, losing five resources to bribe a dealer, or adding the treachery card to your threat area and drawing the attention of the Criminals around you. Then, if you are Caught Cheating (Return to the Dunwich Legacy, 18), both you and your cheating allies must lose two resources and take damage—before you draw yet another card from the encounter deck and face whatever further punishment fate has in store!

The Ruthless Tactician

When you face the heightened threats that lurk in Dunwich, you will need all the allies you can gather, and even old enemies may become new friends. While she once acted as a threat just out of sight in Arkham’s underground, Naomi O'Bannion (Return to the Dunwich Legacy, 52) steps out of the shadows to join you in Return to the Dunwich Legacy as an Ally that players may have the chance to add to their investigator decks. While the daughter of the head of the O’Bannion crime family is on your team, you gain bonuses to both your intellect and combat, but her greatest strength is her cold-blooded ability to manipulate the chaos bag to further her goals. Naomi O’Bannion can cancel an unfavorable chaos token drawn during a combat or intellect test and reveal a new one. Not only does she provide you with a second chance at success, she also guarantees that you will not repeat your past failures. After all, Naomi specializes in making sure her associates learn from their mistakes.

While getting involved with the O’Bannions may place you in a precarious position, Naomi’s skills may prove well worth the risk if you choose to incorporate the new Ultimatums included in Return to the Dunwich Legacy into your games. The Ultimatum of Failure adds an additional auto-fail token to the chaos bag, while the Ultimatum of Broken Promises removes the elder sign token from the chaos bag entirely. But the ultimate mission for the tactician, Remind Me Not to Piss Her Off, tasks you with defeating Seth Bishop (Where Doom Awaits, 293) while Naomi O’Bannion is at your side. But this may be a more difficult task than you remember—there is no telling what the Sorcerer of Dunwich has been up to since your first journey to Dunwich so long ago. Bishop may not even be the greatest of your problems. If you become a liability, Naomi herself will prove far deadlier than anything the Mythos could ever manifest.

Ace in the Hole

Step into the smoky rooms of the Clover Club, meet with the O’Bannion family, and cut whatever deal you must to ensure the safety of your city as you Return to the Dunwich Legacy!

The Price of Power

The Iron Bank in Mother of Dragons

“We who serve the Iron Bank face death full as often as you who serve the Iron Throne.”
–Tycho Nestoris, A Dance with Dragons

Order your own copy of Mother of Dragons at your local retailer or online through our website today!

In A Game of Thrones: The Board Game, the lords and ladies of Westeros take to the battlefield, fighting for the Iron Throne which has been left vacant following the death of Robert Baratheon. Now, in Mother of Dragons, House Targaryen enters the fray, crossing the Narrow Sea to reclaim their throne. But the Dragon Queen needs men and ships, and she is not alone in these struggles. King Robert left the crown in massive debt, now left to his widow Cersei and the Lannisters, and across Westeros every conflict sinks the realm into deeper financial troubles. If a leader wishes to stake their claim, they may need to seek assistance from an external power…

Today, we're pleased to offer you a closer look at the Iron Bank of Braavos in the Mother of Dragons expansion for A Game of Thrones: The Board Game—now available for pre-order at your local retailer or online through our website!

The Riches of Essos

The Iron Bank is one of the wealthiest institutions of the known world, using its vast reach to not only grow its own wealth, but to affect the flow of power in Westeros and beyond. Anyone can ask its moneylenders for aid with the introduction of Iron Bank order tokens to A Game of Thrones: The Board Game. Iron Bank tokens are sea order tokens that the lords and ladies of Westeros can use to purchase loans from the Iron Bank. These tokens can be raided and your unfortunate envoy killed, but because this violence would occur before the envoy can secure your loan, your opponent won't steal power for raiding these Iron Bank orders. But if your messenger can safely reach the northern bay of Braavos, they have the chance to negotiate with the notorious Iron Bank, bringing all of their power to your fingertips… for a price.

By resolving an Iron Bank order token, you gain the right to purchase a loan from the Iron Bank, which can provide you with powerful aid against your enemies. For example, Sea Raiders or Vanguard Cavalry allow you to muster additional forces in areas that you control, while a  Loyal Maester or Master-At-Arms give you the rare opportunity to improve areas, permanently increasing their effectiveness with bonus supplies or bolstered strongholds. Or if you find yourself in need of a more simple, clean solution, you can hire the famous assassins,  The Faceless Men, to destroy one knight and one footman in any area, regardless of who they are aligned with or where they are located. With the ever-shifting alliances of A Game of Thrones: The Board Game, this can help you claim victory in a key conflict or garner favor with another House, should you send the assassins to kill a mutual enemy.

The Secret City

In the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, Essos is just as cruel and vicious as Westeros, meaning force is always one way to help secure your loan of choice. Though it is no easy task, it is possible to gain the upper hand in negotiating with the Iron Bank by controlling the city of Braavos where it resides. If you are the first player to conquer the five-strength neutral city, you claim its token and as long as you maintain control, you pay one fewer power token for each loan you purchase. If, however, one of your rivals seizes the city from you, they immediately take this discount for themselves.

You can't simply take whatever loan you want however—you must choose from what the Iron Bank is willing to offer. To take out a loan, you may choose one of the three loan cards displayed in the Iron Bank section of the board, using your power tokens to pay its initial cost, marked above the loan’s slot in the display. Once you have secured your loan, you may use its effect immediately, instantly becoming a threat even if your enemies thought they had pushed you into obscurity.

At the start of each round, the loan cards of the Iron Bank shift one space to the left, decreasing in price or moving to the bottom of the loan deck is they are left unclaimed. Even if there are no favorable or affordable options, you may simply need to remain patient. But take care not to wait too long, lest a rival swipe the ideal loan from under you and leave you floundering for a new plan without the bank’s assistance.

Paying Dues

Securing a favorable loan may offer you an edge in your battle for the Iron Throne, but while these loans offer you mighty abilities, they should not be taken lightly. Beyond their initial costs, each loan requires you to pay interest, and the shrewd moneylenders of the Iron Bank do not forgive debt easily. If you have taken a loan, you must discard one of your power tokens at the beginning of the Westeros Phase for each loan you have purchased, and you must continue to pay this interest until the end of the game! If you should ever fail to do so, the player who holds the Valyrian Steel Blade chooses one of your units to be destroyed.

The Iron Bank has a fearsome reputation for collecting their debts. When high-ranking debtors fail to honor their agreements, the bank is quick to help rivals depose them with the simple promise that they honor the debt. You must take care not to withdraw more than you can repay, or your enemy Houses may be the least of your worries.

A Humble Servant

The Iron Bank is always glad to be of service. The moneylenders may help you become the unquestioned ruler of Westeros, but it may become an uncomfortable seat once you realize who holds the true power.

Preview the Mining Guild TIE Expansion Pack for X-Wing

“TIE fighters, two of ‘em. I need a better angle.”
   –Kanan Jarrus, Star Wars: Rebels

Allying yourself with the Empire has many benefits. In addition to the copious profits the Mining Guild reaps from working with the Empire to harvest natural resources throughout the galaxy, it also receives its own complement of TIE fighters and other Imperial weaponry. Distinguished by their bold yellow paint scheme, these TIEs further set themselves apart from their Imperial counterparts with a notch cut in their stabilizers to improve visibility.

Order your own copy of the Mining Guild TIE Expansion Pack at your local retailer or online through our website today!

The result of these modifications is a TIE uniquely suited to meet the Mining Guild’s needs. Hugging tight to asteroids, these TIEs swoop into action whenever the Mining Guild’s operations are threatened. When it's released as part of the second wave of expansions for X-Wing, you’ll have the chance to add your own Mining Guild TIE to your Scum and Villainy squadrons with the Mining Guild TIE Expansion Pack.

This expansion contains everything you need to supplement your Scum and Villainy squadrons with one of these nimble fighters. Alongside the beautifully painted Mining Guild TIE miniature featuring the Mining Guild’s distinct paint scheme, you’ll find six ship cards, with four unique pilots ready to protect the Mining Guild’s profits. Your Mining Guild TIE can be further modified with five upgrade cards, while two Quick Build cards provide predefined combinations of pilots and upgrades for you to test all of the ship’s capabilities.

Join us today as we take a closer look at what’s included in the Mining Guild TIE Expansion Pack!

Greed Is Good

With Imperial construction projects advancing at an unprecedented rate, the demand for raw materials such as doonium gas has never been higher. The Mining Guild ruthlessly exploits new deposits of these raw materials on worlds across the galaxy, seeking to secure control of as many as possible.

Such valuable resources are bound to attract the interest of outside parties, of course, so it’s only natural for the Mining Guild to look for ways to protect its investment. A full complement of Mining Guild TIEs is more than enough to give any would-be thieves second thoughts before making a raid on a Mining Guild facility.

Retaining the characteristic speed and maneuverability of other TIE fighters, the Mining Guild variant has one important advantage over other models. Their trademark Notched Stabilizers help them weave in and out of asteroids with ease. As a result, every Mining Guild TIE ignores asteroids while moving, giving them an enormous amount of freedom to make strategic use of these obstacles.

With little to fear from asteroids, Mining Guild TIE pilots take a different approach to battle than most others who fly ships with only three hull and no shields. Free from the strict uniformity of the Empire, these pilots are able to express their own personal flavor, incorporating many of the tricks that characterize the Scum faction into their flying style. Foreman Proach, for example, assigns tractor tokens to enemy ships in his bullseye arc, giving him a chance to fling them into asteroids or other obstacles.

Captain Seevor has a similar knack for disrupting enemy plans. As long as he isn’t in his target's bullseye arc, he can spend his recurring charge to give it a jam token, whether he's defending or performing an attack. This could deprive enemy ships of their green tokens or locks at the perfect moment: just before attack dice are rolled.

Despite making use of these dirty tricks to throw their opponents off balance, Mining Guild pilots have not forgotten the central tenet of flying TIE fighters: strength comes in numbers. Like other TIE variants, Mining Guild TIEs work well in swarms, with Overseer Yushyn highlighting this point. He works especially well with Foreman Proach, replacing Proach's disarm token with a stress token instead, ensuring he can still attack after altering an enemy ship’s course.

In addition to these named pilots, their notched stabilizers make navigating a large group of Mining Guild TIEs a little easier. The Mining Guild’s corporate pilots enjoy more extensive life support systems than Imperial pilots and a Mining Guild Surveyor or Mining Guild Sentry can be good, low-cost alternatives for packing as many ships into your squadron as you can. Although their initiative may be low, you can always exercise some Swarm Tactics to help one of them engage much earlier than they otherwise would.

With his ability and Trick Shot, Ahhav rolls four attack dice during an obstructed attack on the YT-2400!

Like all TIEs, attacking in a large group can help the Mining Guild TIE overcome the limitations of their two die primary attack. If there’s a single Mining Guild TIE pilot who can fly on their own, however, it’s Ahhav. He carries a particular vendetta against big ships, rolling an additional die while attacking or defending against ships that are larger than him. Seeing as he’s likely to be close to asteroids anyway, Ahhav can really show off with a Trick Shot, rolling a total of four dice against a medium or large ship that’s obstructed by an obstacle.

Protect Your Profits

The Mining Guild has put its own clever spin on one of the galaxy’s most iconic starfighters, adapting it to operate in some of the most dangerous environments imaginable. Deploy your own group of Mining Guild TIEs and secure your profits!

Look for the Mining Guild TIE Expansion Pack (SWZ23) to release in the fourth quarter of 2018, along with the rest of Wave II! You can pre-order your copy at your local retailer or online through our website today.

Tools for the Game Master to Run a Clone Wars Campaign

“How many other lies have I been told by the Council? And how do you know that you even have the whole truth?”

–Anakin Skywalker, Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Order your own copy of Rise of the Separatists at your local retailer or online through our website today!

The story of the Clone Wars is at once an epic tale of grand battles and sweeping political gamesmanship, as well as a deeply personal saga, featuring stories of courage and loyalty, temptation and redemption. Will the player characters pursue their duty at any cost, or will they question their orders and seek their own destiny?

Rise of the Separatists—coming very soon to a game store near you—aids players and Game Masters alike in exploring the tones and themes of this period of galactic strife, with new mechanics and narrative frameworks to bring to your Star Wars Roleplaying campaigns.

Introducing the Players

The fates of entire factions rest in the hands of the individuals who care deeply for their cause, but the challenges of war—and the costs required for victory—can sometimes cause those same people to break with their former allies and masters. To dramatize these conflicts and set up situations to force the player characters to face the same choices, GMs need to understand the motivations of the different factions, as well as the behind-the-scenes machinations of each faction’s most powerful actors.

Rise of the Separatists looks in-depth at the origins and organization of the biggest players in the Clone Wars, from the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems to the Jedi Order and the secretive Sith. Game Masters will benefit from a deep dive into the political structures of the Republic, from the past and present factions of the Senate, to the committees and bureaucracies that oversee Republic policy. A cast of political aides and NPC profiles for prominent figures like Padmé Amidala allows GMs to craft their own intrigues and double-crosses involving threats of corruption, sedition, militarism, or secession.

Seen by some as a new, authoritarian extension of Republic authority, the Jedi Order plays a key part in the current state of galactic politics. An overview of the hierarchy of the Jedi High Council and the other councils of the order offers plot hooks and moral quandaries for player characters to explore. Many wonder whether the Jedi have lost their way, sacrificing introspection and balance with the Force for immediate results on the battlefield. For the Separatists, this once-proud tradition seems to have become a mere pawn of the corrupt and ineffectual Senate. And with the Jedi sustaining heavy losses in the escalating fight, padawans are swiftly promoted to knights, and forced to train even younger padawans before their own training is truly complete.

This era sourcebook also pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of the Grand Army of the Republic. A huge bureaucracy is vital to oversee the deployment and supply of clone regiments, local garrisons, and starfighter patrols, as well as medics and mechanics. In addition to fleshing out the forces of the Republic, including stock NPC profiles for archetypal figures, this book also provides Game Masters with a wide array of battle droid minions and adversaries to build up the CIS armies in their games, as well as the figures who have worked behind the scenes to secure their planet’s independence and prosperity. From the cunning Count Dooku to villains like Asajj Ventress and General Grievous, GMs can challenge the PCs with true nemeses over the course of the entire campaign.

Though the true origins of the Clone Wars are shrouded in secrecy, the citizens of the galaxy are all too familiar with the cost they have had to bear. Profiles on the planets Geonosis, Kamino, Naboo, and Tatooine during this era provide additional context for the fighting as well as high stakes for the continually unfolding conflict. Each planet features modular encounters and planet-specific histories, points of interest, and recaps of famous battles fought there during the Clone Wars.

Setting the Stage

In addition to the wealth of information on the major players in the conflict and the worlds at stake, Rise of the Separatists includes guidance and new rules for recreating the feeling of TheClone Wars television series in your campaigns. Game Masters will find an entire chapter dedicated to rules for squads and squadrons, directions for structuring a session in the style of a film serial, and suggestions for expanding the cast of player characters through troupe-style play.

Jedi generals and ace pilots can call upon the rank-and-file to fight at their side in times of desperation, and the new rules for squads and squadrons let players lead these units into battle and command them into formation. Each formation gives a squad or squadron unique benefits, whether they are going dark to infiltrate an enemy position or putting together a search party to find lost allies or locate CIS scouts. Armed with these new optional rules, player characters can strike a decisive blow against an enemy or live to fight another battle thanks to the noble sacrifices of their comrades. In addition to these mechanical resources, Rise of the Separatists supports GMs in setting the stage for a truly epic confrontation, with suggestions for instances when zooming in or zooming out of the action can best capture the action and embroil the PCs in the conflict.

With the variety of stories unfolding against the backdrop of war, the troupe style of play can assist groups in exploring all the stories and settings the Clone Wars has to offer. Rather than trying to contrive scenarios in which a group’s clone and Jedi characters always work together, players can create multiple characters to feature in different scenes and storylines at different times. Rise of the Separatists advises players and GMs on how to swap between these different troupes during a session, including guidance for balancing spotlight time and exploring a range of character motivations. Additionally, the tropes associated with film serials detailed in this book can help GMs maintain the frenetic pace of an action-adventure series, as well as keep your players coming back for more by ending on a cliffhanger.

The End of a More Civilized Age

The Clone Wars were a time for friends and foes to demonstrate their skill and true allegiances, but the conflict will take a toll on them all. As the fighting escalates, those caught up in the conflict must decide for themselves whether they are still fighting for what they believed in, or if they too have had their cause twisted into something less-than-noble by powers behind the scenes. Rise of the Separatists gives GMs everything they need to explore the movers and shakers of this period, heighten the tension at the table, and structure their sessions to encapsulate the feel of the era and the television series.

Players and GMs alike will soon have their chance to pick up this era sourcebook at your local game store or the FFG web store! Pre-order your copy today.

Welcome to the latest installment of the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Create-a-Card series! Every week, the Legend of the Five Rings community votes on a different aspect of the character, with the finished card appearing in a future expansion for Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game!

Last week, over 2,000 fans cast their vote for the general ability of our Unicorn samurai. With 28% of the votes, a theme of Out-of-Clan allies emerged victorious! We're going to define exactly what that means in a few weeks, but in the meantime, we'll continue to further mechanically define our character by determining their skill and glory values.

Read on for an explanation of how these stats will be determined, and cast your vote at the bottom of this article!

A Test of Skill

The options presented today won’t be exact numbers, but instead a general idea of how our character’s skills will be divided. For example, a character with an “extreme military focus” will have exceptional military skill, but very low political skill. However, a character with “balanced skills” has moderate military and political skill with a more even spread between them.  A character with a political or military focus falls somewhere in between these options, slightly favoring one skill over the other.

You will also determine the character's glory, matching “medium” or “high” glory with the above stat spreads. Again, these are more abstract values to determine the range of our samurai’s glory—the exact values for skills and glory will be determined during final development and playtesting!

What went into presenting these options for our samurai's skills and glory? It had been previously determined that our samurai is a member of the Utaku family. Because this is the family that most embraces the honor and traditions of Rokugan in the Unicorn Clan, a low glory skill will not be an option in this vote. Furthermore, the military might of the Utaku helps define them as a family, and those that excel on the battlefield are often entrenched in honor and glory. Thus, a character with an extreme military focus can only have a high glory value, and an extreme political focus will not be an option.

With that in mind, the options for voting this week are:

  • Extreme military focus, high glory
  • Military focus, high glory
  • Military focus, medium glory
  • Balanced skills, high glory
  • Balanced skills, medium glory
  • Political focus, high glory
  • Political focus, medium glory

Consider your choice carefully, and cast your vote below. But make your voice heard quickly, the poll will only be open for 24 hours!

A Clear Focus

Our samurai is beginning to take shape. We’ve already determined their general ability, but now we must decide what conflicts they will excel in. Wil our samurai be a fierce warrior who brings glory to the Unicorn, a shrewd courtier, or something in between? The choice is up to you!

Join us next week as we continue to define our samurai’s role in the world of Rokugan!
