Civilization Begins
Tigris & Euphrates Is Now Available
Property is something to be expanded.
–Ancient Sumerian Proverb
Stake your claim in the fertile crescent and launch a landmark civilization. Tigris & Euphrates is now available at local retailers and in our online store. In this award-winning board game designed by Reiner Knizia, two to four players compete to build Mesopotamian civilizations, balancing commerce, agriculture, housing, and religion. The player who can build the most extensive and well-balanced civilization wins.
This edition maintains the game’s original mechanics and includes all components necessary to play advanced variations as well as a double-sided game board. It also gives the game an updated look with graphic design based on the art of ancient Babylon, Assyria, and Sumer.
Found Your Dynasty
At the start of of Tigris & Euphrates, Mesopotamia is an unsettled but promising wilderness. Treasure-laden temples dot the landscape, but the land is still unbroken by plow and cities have not yet arisen. You claim territory and establish kingdoms belonging to your dynasty by placing leaders on the board. By placing tiles on the board, you create farms, markets, settlements, and more temples, enlarging your kingdoms and gaining victory points in each of the four spheres of civilization.
As the population grows and much of the fertile crescent becomes occupied, intense territorial conflicts inevitably occur between dynasties. Our first preview delved into the game's rebellions and wars, discussing how they are won, lost, and sometimes avoided. In this crowded cradle of urban civlization, even if you do not incite conflicts with your rivals, wars and rebellions will nevertheless threaten you. You may desire peace, but it is impossible until either you or one of your rivals gains supreme dominion over all Mesopotamia.
Build Eternal Monuments
Kings live and die; conflicts and catastrophes destroy farms, settlements, markets and even temples. In the basic gameplay of Tigris & Euphrates, only towering, two-color monuments can permanently endure. Our second preview explored how to build these immense aedifices which provide victory points every round, demonstrating how to conquer monuments that other dynasties built and prevent ones you've built from being conquered.
Advanced gameplay opens up a more challenging part of the Mesopotamian landscape with the advanced game board and allows you to build two more types of structures. Civilization buildings, such as libraries and granaries, mark that a kingdom is outstanding in one specific sphere of civilization. Yet once built, they can be demolished, or even relocated to a kingdom that has become more powerful in that sphere. The five-tile, idol-crowned Wonder, however, can only be constructed once in a game. It may be captured and passed between dynasties, but once finished, it remains on the Mesopotamian landscape forever.
Take Hold of Human History
Millennia ago, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, humans began farming. Markets soon followed, and urban settlements grew up around them. Then came kings and laws, then writing and monuments to make the kings and their laws immortal. Tigris & Euphrates offers you the chance to become a ruler, build monuments, and make your name immortal as you guide civilization’s growth.
